When it comes to kitchens most home owners opt for a monotone palette. However, this space can be personalised by injecting contrasting or bold colours to create added interest.
What’s trending
The most popular kitchen colour trends right now are neutral and rich colours. These colours range from your blacks and warm charcoals to stone, mocha and latte, finishing with white. “These colours are used to create a neutral and timeless canvas for the space, that when combined with other textures like glass cladding, rich, yet graded timbers and worktops will enhance the overall look of the space. With that said, we are also seeing certain colours like lilac and olive being used, but only as an accent and as a very neutral tone, colours that have been graded so to speak, enabling the accent colour to not be overpowering but rather lend itself to the overall feel of the kitchen”, explains Philip Richards of blu_line.
Hanlie Sterling from Sterlings also adds: “We see that a lot of greens, blues and purples are being added to the kitchen, which brings an uplifting mood to the kitchen.”
Getting the look
There are many ways to bring life to this space using colour. One way is through colourful splashbacks. Fedglass, for example, manufactures glass splashbacks that are painted from behind in any colour, with a product called GlassKote. “You can change the glass when boredom strikes, without breaking the bank,” adds Leila Ment from Fedglass.
Other materials to use when trying to add colour can be the door fronts. You can get these in high gloss, matt lacquer or timber. Worktops, ranging from flamed – granite to add texture – to a smooth quartz surface, all add appeal and character to the space. Materials like hot-rolled steel, grey or bronze mirror and steel on the other hand offer a different look.
Paint provides a quick way to update the look of any space; the advantage of paint is that it can be easily changed when your get tired of the colour. Consider creating a focal point using a fresh coat of paint. John Dammerman, from Easylife Kitchens, adds that you can paint the ceiling the same colour as the walls, and paint the cornices in white for a different look.
Another creative idea is adding colour through lighting, which can also create a unique and interesting ambience. Colour through lighting can also set a particular mood if done correctly.
