Light up your kitchen

Written by Esther Moloi

Lighting in the kitchen is not only for functional purposes; it can also be used to set the mood for a great evening of dining and entertaining. To avoid a badly lit kitchen, consider the following tips:

Start with the central lighting

Fluorescent light fittings are still very popular for most kitchens and work well when fitted into your kitchen ceiling. Fluorescent light causes minimal shadows and its low temperature makes them a great energy-saving alternative.

In order to ensure that the lighting is not too harsh, pair up your task lighting fixtures with with ambient lighting, such as pendant light fittings or downlighters, which assist in creating a more sociable atmosphere. This will soften the lines and shadows in the kitchen, while still keeping the room feeling warm and comfortable.

Light up the cabinets

Under-cabinet lighting is becoming a popular lighting option in modern kitchens. Lighting experts suggest LED striplights, as these lights are easy to install and are energy efficient
Another option is downlighters fitted inside your cabinet. This type of lighting allows you to see what is inside your cupboard. Such lighting can illuminate your glassware and crockery collection, giving it the focus and attention it deserves.

Add decorative light

For your kitchen island or built-in bar, play around with aluminium pendants lighting fixtures or brass lamp cages along with vintage bulbs. These will grab your guest’s attention, and will complement the overall design of your kitchen.

A top tip when it comes to lighting is to add dimmer switches to your light fittings. This will help to soften the overall mood of the dining experience.
