How To

Hello spring!

Written by Kerry Johnston

Bring your home out of hibernation and into full spring bloom with some quick decor swaps and other simple seasonal changes…

Begin with a clean slate – Start with a good spring clean and uncluttering. Scrub, dust, wash and pack away all things winter. Tackle one area of your home at a time and consider purchasing some modular shelving or clever storage solutions to help you get organised. Alternatively, sell it!

Bring the garden inside – Plants lift the energy of any room. Fill vases, jars and decorative bottles with your favourite cut flowers, plant up a windowsill herb garden, place a glass terrarium on a coffee table, hang air plants and small succulents in glass bubbles, or park a tall potted tree in the corner of a room.

Paint something – Be it the front door, an accent wall, the stairs, a ceiling, side table or wooden chair, a fresh coat of paint is like a breath of fresh air. It instantly puts you in a good mood. Popular spring colours include pastel shades across the spectrum, Mother Nature’s earthy palette and bright, cheery hues. Think cool, crisp and fresh and you can’t go wrong.

Hang it up or stick it down – Just like a coat of paint, wallpaper and other coverings can really bring a space to life. Cover an assortment of blank canvases in pretty floral fabrics and hang them on a wall; frame a botanical chart or a ‘bouquet’ of pressed flowers for a beautiful vintage wall display; paper just the inside back section of a shelving unit; think wallpaper with textured finishes, reflective designs, blocks of colour, stripes, dots and bold 3D visuals; add strips of colour here and there with Washi tape or use vinyl lettering for an eye-catching, spring-inspired quote (‘The Earth laughs in flowers’ or ‘Bloom where you are planted’, etc).

Scatter new cushions and rugs – One of the quickest and most inexpensive ways to bring spring into your home is by replacing throw pillows and floor rugs. Introduce lighter fabrics, brighter colours and patterns for cushions and swap heavy oriental and wool rugs for bright floral patterns and natural fibres (sisal, jute, seagrass and coir, etc) underfoot.

Re-make the bed (and set the table) – Strip the flannel sheets and opt for cool cottons with high thread counts. Swap out comforters and duvets for sheer florals. Perk up the dinner table or breakfast nook with cheery new placemats, cloths, runners and napkins. Similarly, perk up the guest bathroom with a new set of pretty hand towels.

Scent it – For an extra helping of spring freshness, scent your home with fruity and citrus aromas. Use combinations of essential oils in a diffuser, light a fragranced candle (the colour-changing kind), or scent your drawers and wardrobes with perfumed paper liners and little fabric pouches filled with dried lavender.

Let the light in – Make the most of the daylight by replacing heavy winter curtains with sheer panels, gauzy screens and blinds (or leave the windows uncovered if you can). Stained glass is a wonderful way to filter in light while also adding colour to a room. Install one or more skylights to shine more natural light into deeper parts of the house and lighten darker areas such as passages. Or invest in some solar solutions and let the sun do all the work, while you save on electricity.
