Choosing the perfect table

Eating together is a ritual laden with meaning. Your dining table sets the tone for how you commune. It is probably the most permanent item of furniture you’ll ever purchase – an heirloom piece that you shouldn’t need to change. Designer Haldane Martin shares top tips for selecting a dining table.

Spatial constraints will determine the size of your table.

Analyse your space for the ideal typology: Round, oval, square or rectangle. Each typology has physical benefits as well as symbolic associations. Round tables are more egalitarian but best suited to smaller groups, whereas rectangular tables have a definite hierarchy with heads of the tables presiding over the rest. Square tables can be easily combined to form longer tables.

Consider the atmosphere you want to create: Taller tables say, “I’m in a rush.” You’re so close to standing that you hardly sit down. This is great if you’re after a speedy turnaround time as in an espresso bar. A lower table with lounge seating is less formal, creating a laid-back mood which is wonderful outdoors. Smaller tables offer intimacy promoting conversation.

Remember to keep the chairs in mind: Allow for 600mm to 900mm per person at the table. The distance between people can contribute towards the atmosphere. Chairs with arm rests are grand with round tables, while benches, a shared seating platform, suit rectangular tables and foster “togetherness”.

Lastly, each material has practical and emotional qualities to bring to the table: Think about the durability, acoustic, temperature and light properties of the material, but also the way the material makes you feel. Wood ages but it’s warm and inviting. Glass can be very slick but can also feel cold.
