A new dark colour palette adds depth, sophistication

Deep tones and dramatic hues help connect our desire for elegance with a celebration of history and heritage. To help you express this contemporary direction in your home, Plascon has released a ‘family’ of deep and dramatic colours that is part of its annual colour forecast for 2025.

Dark is one of four distinct families featured in the forecast, which also includes the Bright, Natural and Neutral families, each with their own colourways. The forecast itself carries the overarching theme of hybridity and invites homeowners to make their own choices.

Plascon’s Dark family draws its inspiration from historical opulence and modern innovation and reflects a perfect harmony of classic charm and contemporary flair. The colours stand out with their striking, refined shades that work hard both as eye-catching accents or when used for an entire dramatically-hued room.

‘Whether used as details to add depth or full-blown statement features, the Dark family infuses any space with an opulent allure that is sophisticated and deeply connected to the evolving design sensibilities of South Africa,’ says Kristel Dreyer, brand marketing manager at Kansai Plascon.

Dark is an intense, nuanced collection that is a fresh alternative to classic black while still maintaining depth and elegance. Black Bean (71), for example, is to brown what charcoal is to black – providing a softer, cooler-toned variation of its more saturated counterpart. Meanwhile, Black Beard (B7-E1-1) offers a luxurious focal point with its midnight purple undertones. Rhine Castle’s (54) grey-brown, by contrast, presents a subdued take on light, airy millennial grey.

Together, the Dark family colours evoke a sense of ‘neo noir’ – a modern reinterpretation of the classic noir aesthetic. Rooted in the enigmatic allure of mid-20th-century film noir, neo noir combines its predecessor’s shadowy, atmospheric visuals and morally complex themes with contemporary elements such as striking saturations, unconventional storytelling and updated design sensibilities.

Nuance is the defining characteristic of every hue in the Dark family, with each one perfectly designed to create standout tone-on-tone decor or offer a grounding element in a personalised palette. For example, Mother Earth (Y1-E1-1) is a deep khaki that manages to be both grounded and organic as well as sophisticated, while the leather-like hue of Beautiful Brown Eyes (R3-E1-1) brings elegance and masculine refinement.

Rich, textural tones blend effortlessly with natural pigments, delivering a daring, modern twist on the ‘old money’ aesthetic, cleverly dubbed ‘bold money’. Inspired by nature’s finest treasures, the jewel highlights in the Dark family evoke sumptuous comfort, with richness that reflects the beauty and rarity of precious stones. Showstopper (102) strikes a balance between garnet and ruby red. Mystic Copper (03-C1-1) brings the moody orange of carnelian or deep citrine to life, adding a touch of warmth and depth.

With Dark, you can achieve the harmonious blend of sophistication and edginess infused with a sense of past meets present.
