Nestled in the beautiful and well-preserved terrain of KwaZulu-Natal, lies The Gorge, a private game lodge and spa with a truly South African twist.

The Gorge is certainly changing views with innovative architecture, divine decor and design, and simply spectacular landscapes.

The idea that the building would fit and blend into the natural environment of The Gorge and the sandstone cliffs was central to the owners of the lodge. They wished for minimal impact on the indigenous plant life and maximum views of The Gorge. The interesting and innovative shape of the lodge takes the form of a Zulu beehive, and has the Zulu Kingdom theme that richly accents our country’s diverse and varied cultural heritage.

Local sandstone and quartz stones found on the farm were used and blend in beautifully with the sandstone cliff faces. A great amount of glass was used as well, in order to further maximise the views.

When you look around this magnificent place, you would not want barrier walls hindering your chance to soak up the superb scenery and tantalising terrain. Clean lines were used in the design, and a minimalistic approach was taken. White linen and well-selected artwork further enhances these attributes. Katie Allen Decor and Design was the interior designer on the project, and natural colours of brown, beige and white were used, with different textures to imbue the warmth and elegance of the lodge.

Owing to the fact that the sandstone cliffs are constantly changing with the climate shifts, The Gorge attempts to change people’s views regarding the KZN south coast in terms of service excellence, fine dining and African spa treatments. This lavish retreat has much to offer visitors, if not in its astonishing beauty, then in the excellent service and professionalism that is evident at the retreat.

Guests at The Gorge are luxuriously pampered when they stay at the lodge. Each chalet looks identical from the exterior view, yet they each have a unique decor twist. Indigenous plants, animals and local history all served as inspiration for this. Chalet 1 is decorated with the indigenous Samango monkey theme, and is a favourite of the owner, who appreciates this space for the striking black khaki tub chairs, scatter cushions and ottoman it contains. “The colours and textures are stunning,” explains the owner. Chalet 2 is reflective of the protea theme which is not only our national flower and cricket team, but also a beautiful piece of South African heritage. Chalet 3 has the theme of wood and trees, chalet 4 has scenes of Africa, and chalet 5 is the honeymoon suite with elegant shades of off-white.
