A few days ago SA Home Owner’s Editor Kerry Hayes introduced me to the spectacular lighting work of Bruce Munro. Admittedly, I hadn’t heard of his name before, but once I started browsing through images of his light installations, which look like fantasy scenes straight out of the movie Avatar, I couldn’t get enough!

Born in 1959, in Salcombe, England, Munro is an installation artist known for his large scale lighting installations and sculptures. He works with a small team of lighting designers to create visually powerful lighting schemes for commercial and private residences alike. His Field of Light exhibition, consisting of over 15, 000 separate glowing LED lights, and installed at a number of high-profile spaces in the UK, has garnered critical acclaim and brought him worldwide recognition.

On his website – www.brucemunro.co.uk – the artist states:  When I was eighteen years old I came to a profound realisation that ‘life’ was in a continuous state of movement and it was pointless trying to control it too much. I was interested in ‘light’ as a medium at Art School; but it was in my mid twenties (whilst living in Australia) that I started to work and experiment with light in a formal sense. It’s been a 29-year journey, since making my first illuminated sculptural prototype, on the floor of my flat in Sydney.”

Munro was originally inspired to create his Field of Light ‘flower fields’ by the Australian red desert. He hoped to “create a field of light stems that, like the dormant seed in a dry desert, would quietly wait until darkness falls and then under a blazing blanket of southern stars bloom with gentle rhythms of light.” In his illuminated fields, Munro is able to juxtapose nature and technology, showcasing the correlation of all things.

Equally exciting are the assortment of bespoke commissions Munro takes on for private individuals, architects, interior designers, property developers and landscape designers. His commissions include chandeliers, pendant lights, feature lights, and wall lights as well as exterior lighting. Each piece adds drama and creates unique focal points to otherwise ordinary rooms.

Each of Munro’s installations and lighting commissions has an ethereal, other-worldly quality that captivates the viewer’s imagination. He takes you a voyage of discovery where you are able to marvel at the innate beauty of each of his creations. Step into the fantasy world of Bruce Munro and let him take you on an inspiring journey…
