Nothing spells glamour and sophistication in the home quite like big, bold lighting which is why we are thrilled to announce that The European Light & Design Centre recently launched its brand new FLOS Showroom at their Cape Town store. ELDC has been distributing the FLOS brand exclusively in Southern African for some years now, so the new FLOS addition to their showroom is a welcome addition for those looking for stunning lighting.

FLOS, a celebrated Italian lighting design brand that has stood the test of time, hails from the early 1960s. With designers like Philippe Starck and Patricia Urquiola in its line up, FLOS has been at the forefront of lighting design for over 50 years.

Belgium born ELDC Founder and CEO, Marc Machtelinckx, has enjoyed a long association with FLOS in Europe, and eventually decided to settle in South Africa to start ELDC in 2001. He spent many years in Belgium in the luxury lighting industry, and as an industry expert, Marc’s philosophy for ELDC is to make available some of the world’s top original lighting brands to Southern Africa, and to educate South Africans on saying no to fakes. Other key brands stocked by ELDC include Delta Light, Luce Plan, and Ingo Maurer to name a few.

Part of the new expanded FLOS collection at ELDC, is the ‘Tatou’ series by Patricia Urquiola, a renowned Spanish décor designer and ‘Tarraxacum’ by Achille Castiglioni.

Taking its name from the French word for ‘Armadillo’, the ‘Tatou’ series draws its influence from that of classic antique Japanese armour, offering dynamism, lightness and flexibility. Each piece in the ‘Tatou’ series is made up of four identical elements, each one interwoven to form a unified dome which diffuses direct light either upwards or downwards, as well as allowing light to pass through as a result of its perforated shell. It has a cable electronic dimmer, which allows the regulation of light brightness. The lights ‘shell’ shade protects direct light to the eyes and produces a harmonic play on light and shadow through the perforated sections. It is both a highly decorative object and a practical lighting product.

The ‘Taraxacum’ pendant lamp makes for a dramatic and striking focal point within a living space. Transparent in colour, it provides for a unique aesthetic due to its cluster of bulbs. The pendant lamp provides both direct and reflected lighting from sixty clear globe lamps. The lamp is an iconic piece of artistry, incorporating both light and art.
