“Essentially, the house itself is clean and modern in layout, which has allowed us to put our individual stamp on it in terms of decor, and incorporate pieces we have collected while living in Hong Kong, Australia, the UK and South Africa. We would describe it as a modern fusion of African, European and Asian,” explain the owners.
The idea for their home was to be clean-cut and open-plan, maximising space and minimising corridors, and so, according the home owners, “blurring the distinction between the outside and inside areas, creating one seamless living area”.
In keeping with the uncluttered priority, the contemporary design was kept simple, yet symmetrical, with east and west wing mirroring each other – emphasised by the dual staircase leading to the second level of the home. Ensuring easy flow between rooms, the home was based on a cruciform shape, allowing clear views from the centre along both axes. With all living and entertainment areas based on the ground floor, including the separate TV room fully equipped with cosy fire, entertaining with large gatherings is a breeze, which is essential to this family’s lifestyle.
With one exception to their open theme, where three of the four upstairs bedroom bathrooms are open plan, the fourth is enclosed “to suit more conservative guests”, explain the owners.
The contemporary design and architecture of open indoor-outdoor living is mirrored by the eclectic interior finishes and fittings, with each room defined using embellishments, colour or texture to give it a distinct personality and style, and reflect the fun-loving nature of the family.
