The relaxing atmosphere and lack of walls appealed to this family’s need for time off from the busy life they lead in Johannesburg.
“We were looking for a simple house design, and we also wanted something different from our current home in Johannesburg. I wanted a different feel; I didn’t want to leave my house in Johannesburg and still feel as if I’m in the same house in KZN,” says the home owner.
With an established reputation for building innovative homes and keeping his clients’ wants and needs in mind, Clayton Hodgson of Crest Developers was called in to fill the brief.
The architect and interior designer did a perfect job. The main entrance to the house is on the first floor, where the bedrooms are situated, and you have to take a downward route to the living room. “I love the flow of the house and the open-plan design, combined with rooms that can be opened up or closed when desired.”
Not wanting modern furnishings, but rather solid wood, traditional shapes, the home has a rustic, rural feel. “Some pieces we purchased, but the majority of pieces were manufactured for us,” she says.
The kitchen, being the favourite room in the home, took some serious design consideration. “I was tempted to have a modern kitchen, but I wasn’t sure if I was going to like it. I had bought the appliances even before we designed the kitchen, so the brief to my kitchen designer was that whatever we came up with had to be designed around the stove. I was also not certain if the modern kitchen design would go with the Ranger stove.
“We ultimately decided on a design that brings together a modern look and traditional aesthetic; the cupboards are modern and the centre island is traditional. This works with the overall feel of the house, where there is a little bit of shine, which doesn’t offend me, as it is well integrated into our style,” says the home owner.
