Trending colours and creative spaces all the rage at this year’s East Coast Radio House + Garden Show

With only two days to go until the 40th celebration of the East Coast Radio House + Garden Show, the Durban Exhibition Centre is set to come alive with a gathering of local designers, décor lovers, homemakers, entertainers, celebrities, experts, families and friends.

The show taking place this Friday the 24th of June to Sunday the 3rd of July 2022 will have as one of its key highlights the Creative Spaces Pavilion by Plascon that will acknowledge ‘Flexibility’ as the latest trend. Incorporating the latest Plascon Winter and Spring palettes, five local KZN interior designers will share their take on ‘flexible living’ by showcasing spaces that focus on flexible design for living, learning and working.

The latest colour trends revealed

As a leader in the coatings business for over 130 years, Plascon continues to lead the way when it comes to trends and colour movements. “The season of disconnect and isolation that we have been experiencing has created an intrinsic need to feel grounded and connected in a post-pandemic world,” says Suvasin Moodley, Plascon’s Head of Decorative Marketing. “This is why Plascon’s 2022 winter colour palette takes its cue from earthy, wide-open spaces, our verdant African landscape with its fertile soil, and dramatic skies that you only see when you’re away from the confines of the city. It is a thought-out collection of colours that brings the freedom of the great outdoors, inside, to our homes and living spaces.”

The five designers who will be wowing visitors at the show with how they have reimagined, reinvented and reconnected their creative spaces in the Pavilion includes Home Studio Décor and Interiors, Lindley & Co Interior Design, Coco and Marigold and Fabrique Interiors.

Homegrown & flexible design at its best

According to Lindley & Co, they will be creating a living room setting that reflects the calm oasis we all need and crave in the craziness of today’s world. “I have worked with a neutral palette paired with lots of natural textures and incorporated products from local artisans, artists and crafters,” says Lindley & Co Interior Design owner and curator, Kirsty Lindley. “I hope to inspire a ‘return to calm and serene spaces’ that allows the body & mind to relax and unwind.”

Interior decorator, Carmen Robbertse, from Fabrique Interiors is inspired by creatives and entrepreneurs who have started making and selling products – from their homes, for others homes. According to Robbertse, her Creative Space will showcase a Living Room Boutique of local designs, paired with fabrics, wallpapers and rugs from Silk House. “Beautiful Living Spaces, to create a beautiful living space,” says Robbertse.

Home Studio Décor and Interiors is a subsidiary of Home Studio, which has three of the largest furniture stores in KwaZulu-Natal and is a proud local manufacturer of solid wood furniture. According to Renee Kritzinger from Home Studio Décor and Interiors, this affords them the opportunity to fully customize orders for their clients. “We carry a full range of household and office furniture as well as décor items such as scatters, artwork, carpets and wallpapers. We are proud to showcase at this year’s show our newest range of couches and occasional chairs from Home Studio Lounge, a proud subsidiary of the HS Group,” says Kritzinger.

“I absolutely love black, grey and white in any combination.  It will always be a classic and its perfect for an exterior space which I will be creating.” says Tarron Callister, founder and owner of the brand Coco & Marigold.  “The crisp cool and bold tones allow for one to play around and works beautifully with lots of greenery, which is the key to making an outdoor dining space come alive!

Mad Designs will be doing what they do best – pushing the boundaries of what is considered ‘traditional’ design. “Why aim for ordinary when you can aim for Mad?” says flamboyant co-owner of Mad Designs, Nqobile Mthembu. According to Mthembu the team loves staying connected to key global industry trends, drawing inspiration from the sophisticated and contemporary designs – whether from Italy, the east or the US –  and then making it relatable to the African context.

“The five chosen designers all understand flexibility to be a new trend,” says Cairey Baxter-Bruce, East Coast Radio House + Garden Show Director. “As a result, interiors and living spaces need to be designed to be easily adaptable, while outdoor areas have become more valuable as a key living space. This year the focus is on multifunctional spaces as work, home and leisure are becoming increasingly intertwined, and we cannot wait to see the final creative spaces produced by these talented designers at the Plascon Pavilion,” she adds.
