No power? Here’s how to keep safe at home

Everyone has a story about a robbery or housebreaking during load shedding. Cellphones go missing through open windows. Or robbers walk in to take TVs, computers, and jewellery, knowing the electronic security doesn’t work. Bronwyn Littley from Trellidor has some simple home safety solutions in the form of new cost-effective security barrier designs.

As Littley says, security barriers are “always on”, with or without power. Burglar bars on windows and security gates on doors are generally not dependent on a power source. They are always in place, doing their job. All you have to do is remember to keep them closed and locked.

Burglar proofing is sometimes called the “last line of defence” because it is the final obstacle to criminals that have deactivated all other security measures. But during load shedding, security gates and burglar bars are actually the first line of defence because they protect people and possessions whether there is power or not.

Screen them out

Griffin Guard is the newest entry into the Trellidor security screen range. These are reasonably priced, framed, see-through screens that are hardly noticeable once fitted to cover windows or doors. Thieves, insects, monkeys and baboons can’t get through the screens, so you’re safe from theft, mosquito bites and primates making a mess of your kitchen.

“This product doesn’t look like burglar proofing at all, so it’s perfect for secure estates that have rules in place about the external appearance of homes. And the price is very attractive for people who love the look but don’t need the high security version,” says Littley.

More protection for less expense

Trojan TX and Trojan Classic look similar to the original Trellidor sliding trellis gates that South Africans are familiar with. But these are new products. The Trojan TX has been remodelled for reliable strength and positioned at an attractive price.

The Trojan Classic is a step up in strength and cost but well within reach of those who need strong, dependable burglar proofing to help prevent housebreaking or a home invasion.

Both trellis gate models are manufactured in an expanding format for doors and windows and a fixed format for windows. They are typical Trellidor-quality products with attention to ease-of-use details. They slide smoothly and have a compact sash that stacks neatly to the side. The strong lock engages in several locking points using just one key.

“If power outages make you nervous about how safe you are at home, we have several ways of helping you finance your security barrier purchases. Take a look at these on our website to see which one works for you and get your first line of defence in place as soon as possible. Power outages and crime are with us for a long time to come,” says Littley.
