Real people. Real relationships. Real service. It’s a sentiment that captures something important about elevenpast. Behind the website, the products and the deliveries is a family-run South African business built around real people and real relationships.

Christiaan Tickner joined elevenpast in 2021 as financial director and today oversees the financial side of the business, while Carlo Tickner heads up marketing and sales, alongside product development and procurement. Their responsibilities may be different, but their approach to the business is shared: make good decisions, treat people fairly and build something with long-term value.
Being family-run creates a closeness at management level that naturally extends throughout the company. From the warehouse and operations teams to sales and customer service, there is a sense that everyone is part of the same business and accountable for the experience elevenpast delivers. And, ultimately, that experience is about people.
Behind every order is a person and, very often, a story. It might be someone excitedly preparing their home for a dinner with friends and waiting for the chandelier that will finally complete the room. Or, it might be a customer whose excitement turns to frustration when a much-anticipated item arrives damaged in transit. Both moments matter.

“We try to remind ourselves that we’re all human. We all have homes, families, friends and things that are important automation. Technology has transformed e-commerce and made businesses more efficient, but elevenpast believes efficiency should never come at the expense of human connection.
There are times when a customer doesn’t need an automated response. They need someone who understands the problem, listens to what they are trying to achieve and takes responsibility for finding a solution.
Real family. Real team. Real connections. Real customer service.
Combine that philosophy with a strong understanding of contemporary design, carefully selected products, fair pricing and fast delivery, and you begin to understand what has driven elevenpast’s growth.
Lighting, in particular, has become an important part of the elevenpast story. The company has built its position in South African lighting e-commerce through years of product knowledge, understanding what customers are looking for and focusing on practical solutions rather than simply selling a fitting.

The business also believes strongly in building its own identity. In a competitive digital landscape, where ideas, strategies and even online experiences can quickly be replicated, elevenpast remains focused on the things that are much harder to copy: knowledge, trust, consistency and service.
Competitors may follow a trend, a product category or a new idea. However, relationships cannot be duplicated, and trust cannot be manufactured overnight. For the brothers, growth has therefore never simply been about becoming bigger. It is about building a company customers can trust – one that stands behind what it sells, admits when something has gone wrong and works to make it right. That requires integrity, particularly when nobody is watching.
As elevenpast continues to grow, introduce new products and evolve with the South African design landscape, the challenge is to preserve the personal character that helped build the business in the first place. Because behind every click, every order and every delivery, there is still a person. And, on the other side, there should be one, too.
