The mod squad

Written by Guinevere Davies

Versatile, comfortable and stylish – it’s no surprise we’re rediscovering the joys of modular seating.

Whatever your seating requirements, you can be sure a modular sofa – one literally bought in sections – will satisfy. Space is never an issue when your seating arrangement can be effortlessly pulled apart, rearranged and added to piece by piece. And, with a range of options from various retailers to choose from, you’re sure to find a style to suit your summer entertaining needs.

Mah Jong by Kenzo Takada – Roche Bobois

Created in 1971 by designer Hans Hopfer, the Mah Jong sofa has become a signature piece for Roche Bobois, with the fun functionality of the original design finding new life in the hands of fashion luminaries Jean-Paul Gaultier, Missoni and, most recently, Kenzo Takada. As Takada explains: “From the outset, I wanted to use inspiration from the patterns found on kimonos, specifically the weaving used for the Nō theatres. These designs and patterns were the guidelines of this collection for Roche Bobois, but I wanted to completely change their colours and interpret them in a new way.”

Manhattan and Mondu – Weylandts

Boasting sleek and slightly smaller proportions, the Manhattan range from Weylandts is a perfect fit for contemporary, urban spaces. The range consists of eight different elements that can be purchased individually and assembled in any number of combinations. If you’d prefer to take the guesswork out of the situation, the Mondu Modular is available in a timeless light-grey fabric and only three elements to choose from.

RAYN by Philippe Starck for Dedon – Cane Time

The brainchild of design legend Philippe Starck, Dedon’s RAYN collection can also live as happily inside as out, with extended armrests that double as side tables, allowing for maximum relaxation. Says Starck: “I think the only style of tomorrow is freedom – freedom to choose what you need, and what you want.”
