We were thrilled to hear about Meekel, a brand new online shop showcasing the best in South African design. Here you will found carefully curated design brands ranging from the well established to the future stars.
The concept for the site was born out of frustration when Meekel creators, Kerry and Bobby Hugill, found themselves searching for originality in a sea of mass production and convenience in a country where designers and artists are spread far and wide.
Realising that pieces featured on the pages of glossy magazines were often not readily available to the majority of readers, the Hugills’ set out to create an online shop that showcased South African design talent across the board.
Design enthusiasts can now simply browse Meekel’s online collection from wherever they wish and have breath-taking items delivered directly to their door.
The name of the online shop was inspired by Bobby’s mother, who’s maiden name was chosen out of respect for her enormous passion for living life to the fullest. The husband and wife duo too share a passion – one for local design. The team carefully select each artist/designer and pick key items from their range.
The site is an endorsement of quality in terms of design and manufacturing and it is important that each and every piece uphold the high standards for which Meekel hopes to become known. “The site has a really personal feel, “ says Kerry, “we might only stock one item by a certain designer because we hand pick everything instead of taking the entire range”.
