Terrific tiles

Written by Shereen Lurie

The options for tiles are endless. From the perennially popular and classic subway tile, which looks fantastic in modern kitchens and bathrooms, to the more exotic-looking honeycomb tile, a stylish tiling choice for your bathroom floor, you are spoilt for choice. Three tile experts share with us their favourite tiles and tile layouts.

Sasha-Lee Kinnear, marketing coordinator, WOMAG

Asking for our favourite layout is like asking a mom who her favourite child is; different layouts work for different spaces. We encourage looking at different options to see what will work best in the space. Some examples would be laying the tiles in a diagonal or brick pattern. Mixing materials is a big trend and using wood-look tiles with natural stone tiles as an accent is a great option when you want something interesting but don’t want to go bold. Lastly, we know that different layouts are interesting but could require skill to install. That means it will take time and it can get expensive. That is why WOMAG has pre-created tile layouts such as the Negro 3D, which adds a dramatic effect and a unique focal point. We love unique layouts because this adds interest or even a hint of drama, creating memorable vignettes and enhancing the personality of the space.

At the moment, I am absolutely in love with the hexagonal or honeycomb tile layout. Following the simple slick minimalist look, tile design trends are now shifting towards including more decorative elements and patterns, reminiscent of vintage styles. The hexagon tile is bang on-trend with this movement – offering an organically inspired shape, weaved in with a historic allure and modernised with current materials, colours and textures. Whether used on the floor or the wall, the hexagonal tile layout will be sure to make a standout focal point wherever it is used.

I’m a fan of the dispersed hexagon mosaic tile – part functional piece, part art installation. This layout has the mosaic disbanded and thinned out, as it transitions to a painted wall. While a hexagon shape has been used here, other shapes may also be used to similar effect. Triangles, square and rhombus shapes would also work well, as long as the size of the tile or mosaic is small. This avant-garde approach to a tiling layout is suitable for any interior area where a distinct and original installation is preferred.

The mix-and-match tiling layout relies on mixing different sizes, shapes and looks. Create the layout by combining small square patterned tiles, long rectangle wood-looks and a variety of cement-look cuts in between. Combined with a trendy herringbone installation on the floor, this eclectic pattern is perfect for creating interesting one-of-a-kind features on walls and floors alike.
