A home office doesn’t have to be a serious space, even if the work you do there is. Follow our tips for a well-organised and stylish area that you enjoy spending time in.

Avoid clutter – Elisha Annandale, founder of interior decor company Décor Identity, advises that you keep your home office clean and simple. “Don’t clutter, and get organized. Use a lot of compartments to pack away and keep things in order.”

Optimise lighting – When natural light is unavailable or you are working late at night, prevent eye strain and boost energy by optimizing your lighting. Try to make the light in the room even and indirect so that you aren’t straining your eyes in overly bright or dark areas. A dimmer will provide adjustable light levels.

Comfort is key – A comfortable, ergonomically designed chair will ensure maximum comfort and maintain posture for a prolonged periods.

A mix of neutral and bold – Annandale suggests you use calm colors on your walls and larger furniture pieces, but introduce some exciting fresh accessories and colour in your art, small furniture pieces and decorative elements.

Allocate desk space – Bianca Suttner, owner of interior architecture, design and décor firm Dolce Vita Designs, says that desk areas need to be sufficient for the particular use of the home study. The home office may be used as an office for a small business or a workspace for two young teenagers at school. “In each situation ensure that you have enough space for your laptop/drawing board/ varsity project and the chairs that are needed at the desk.”

Natural light – Suttner recommends picking a room in the house that has natural light and good ventilation so that you don’t feel claustrophobic in the working environment. A plus is easy access to a garden space or green surroundings.

Internet access – A strong Wi-Fi signal will keep all your devices online without any connection problems. Choose your internet connection speed to suit your requirements i.e. video conference calls, uploading/downloading large files versus general browsing and email, which wouldn’t be affected by a slower connection.

Keep hydrated – Suttner says a water and coffee station is a great addition to any home office. If this isn’t an option, keep a jug of water nearby to keep you hydrated.
