Stand-out kitchens from 2020

Written by Shereen Lurie

Some kitchens are born to stand out from the crowd. Here are a selection of kitchens that really impressed the team at SA Home Owner with their unique design features and top quality craftsmanship.

1. Created for family

Emanating luxury, this striking kitchen design was realised by blu_line, a high-end kitchen specialist based in Johannesburg and Cape Town. The owner desired a seamless integration of the kitchen with the surrounding space. To achieve this, various levels were brought in for an architectural element while floating units were used to accentuate the furniture-like feel of the space. blu_line used specialised glass doors with custom smoked mirrors and natural smoked timber as well as various natural stone surfaces to create interest and drama.

2. For us…

The brief for this kitchen was simple: a contemporary aesthetic in a two-tone palette with the island being in the darker tone. With this in mind, Jonathan Wolfe Kitchens created this beautiful space. SupaWood wrap doors were used, the island in Storm Grey and the rest of the kitchen in White Ivory.

3. Home is where the heart is

For the owner, the kitchen is probably her favourite room of the home. “When we planned our home we were not willing to compromise on our kitchen and it had to be the heart of our home. We entertain often and generally we only start cooking once our guests arrive, therefore we wanted our home to revolve around our kitchen. We love that we can entertain between eight to 80 friends and family without any spatial discomfort.”

4. All you could ask for

Dezign A Door designed, manufactured and supplied all the bespoke cabinetry throughout this spectacular home, aside from the internal doors. These included the cupboard doors and drawers, panels and carcasses as well as the installation of these items. The combination of colours and materials used brought the owner’s vision to life in a way that surpassed her expectations.

5. For the family

The kitchen and scullery are a highlight for the owner of this home. “Having a spacious kitchen is what we wanted and planned for. The scullery is where we can hide the dirty dishes and washing up, ensuring the house always looks impeccably clean.”

7. Heart and home

The Kitchen Studio was tasked with designing and installing the bespoke kitchen and bedroom cupboards in this modern home. The Textured Grey leather doors combined with Altisima veneer and white acrylic gloss were used in the kitchen, with stylish worktops made up of Brutestone Crystal White. The owners opted for a Storm Grey to give their bedroom cupboards a classy finish.

8. Gorgeously grand

For this kitchen, blu_line was commissioned with the task of designing a space that would not only complement the contemporary interiors of the home, but also suit the owners’ needs. For this reason, the monoline collection with its softer tones and sleek detailing was considered. The owners desired subtle texture to enhance the aesthetic appeal of the space. blu_line used smoked timber with bronze etched aluminium, and combined softer flamed granite stone to achieve a subtle yet dramatic space with soft toned glass cladding to add an element of luxury.

9. A haven of harmony

Soldor Exclusive Kitchens and Cupboards (White River) was commissioned to manufacture and install the built-in cabinetry and joinery throughout this lodge. A mixture of textures for the cabinetry and joinery as well as Caesarstone and leathered black Rustenburg granite for the work surfaces come together to create an upmarket aesthetic.

10. Big, bright and beautiful

For this family, it’s the kitchen that they all love. “It is the heart of our home: we have family breakfasts at the kitchen island each morning, delicious recipes and tasty aromas and family time cooking and baking. It also allows for a good catch-up with friends over the island with a cup of tea or a glass of wine, and it overflows into the dining area which is where our family has dinner each evening.”
