Symmetry, comfort and style are the words that immediately come to mind when describing this family home. “It’s difficult to find one area that I love most. I am very happy with all the spaces in the house and the way in which it flows,” the home owner says.

Situated on an estate in a popular KwaZulu-Natal resort town, the house was built with family and the view in mind. “This was a challenging site on which to design a house. The site was almost at 45 degrees, and there were very specific massing restrictions within which the structure had to be built,” the owner says.

The L-shaped plan was important, the architect adds. “As a result of the site not being rectilinear, the L shape means the living area is splayed out. This results in a very open-plan feeling, where you really feel the extent of the house as you come up the stairs into the living area.”
