When the owners of this home engaged in building and designing their ideal dwelling, they envisioned a home of timeless architecture and traditional aesthetics. “The style had to blend into the surrounding neighbourhood (which is traditional) so we took the classical route, using large sash windows and a neutral colour tin roof to give an overall elegance to the house,” explains the owner.

Damion Furness, from Meinesz and Furness Architects, explains: “The site was a subdivision of an existing property with a tennis court and several large trees dominating the new stand. The house was positioned on the same level as the tennis court, which became the north side lawn and garden, allowing the house to flow out onto the garden. The existing large trees determined the position of the house, as it was the client’s intention to preserve as many of the trees as possible.”

To cater for the family’s lifestyle, the interiors boast generous sized rooms and open-plan interiors that flow from the kitchen through to the family room and onto the garden. The children’s play room is separate but close to the living space, while the formal dining room and lounge are positioned in relation to the kitchen and entrance hall. The owner says: “Our family room is where we spend our time, it flows directly from the kitchen so preparing meals becomes part of the lifestyle.” The luxurious main bedroom, dressing room and bathroom were also designed to be as spacious as possible.

The interior decor design perfectly complements the elegant architecture. This was achieved by a harmonious blend of classic pieces with what the owners describe as “a touch of glam”. The idea behind this was to create spaces that will not tire or fade as time goes by. The use of solid wooden flooring also adds underfoot luxury and charm to these spaces. With its traditional corrugated iron roof that makes reference to the original Johannesburg architectural vernacular, everything about this home makes it ideal for this family. Details and planning have ensured that this home will remain a classic one for years to come.
