Crate stools by Combo Colab

This has got to be one of the most important events in the diary for global furniture trends. It would be a heinous crime not to bring you snippets from reporters and bloggers worldwide that were lucky enough to experience such a sensory overload!

The show is now in it’s 52nd year and has always been the Mecca for showcasing the very latest in furniture and lighting design. I’ve been trawling the online papers and blogs trying to get a sense, a definitive trend and I think it’s safe to say that there was a very diverse presence. From the weird and wonderful stools by Swedish collective “Front”, which have a close resemblance to headless pigs, to the world of Philippe Starck with his Kartell creation the “Uncle Jack sofa”, which is a head-turning, bright coral polycarbonate sofa. Absolutely stunning!

Being an upcycling designer, I was so thrilled to see new and exciting ranges appearing with re-use as their ethos. Take the crate stools from US-based Combo Colab for instance. We live in times of mass excess, so it’s becoming more and more important to reinvent and restore.

A fundamental part of design is light, and this year the show did not disappoint. Chilean-based firm Q Studio produced LUM – a modular copper panel system with solid and light components really stood out from the crowd. Perhaps the reason it resonated with so many was due to the responsible sourcing of this natural material and that these works of art are made by inmates from Colina prison to rehabilitate and integrate them back into society.

I could carry on filling your minds with many more items, but over saturation is a dangerous thing! If you want to see and hear more, I suggest you visit the Gizmag blog, as it has great shots from this year’s Fair, which will keep you busy for a good few hours!

Best wishes,
