The most important thing for a home in Gauteng is, of course, a wall around your property! Not only to keep the bad out, but in this instance, to keep the dogs and kids in. So finally, we are up to date on the requirements of Gauteng living. Our gate was installed last week, and the metal work in the front wall is in and looking good.
On that metal note, we have commissioned a new company, Stairs by Peters, to produce our steel staircase. The drawings and specs have been perused, and we have been impressed by the professionalism and insight of this steel company. Now we are trying to decide on what wood to use for the tread – Meranti is so boring – we would like the staircase to be a real feature.
The cladding will be finished by the end of the week. Amazing how it rounds off the look completely. The guys from Rockwood Cladding have done an awesome job! My hubby has been trying out various evening photos with different lighting to get a good view of the front. I’m not sure how his photography is progressing, but we are in grave danger being executed by Eskom for turning lights on in peak time instead of turning them off. Oh wait… the outdoor lights run off the solar system! We had a smug moment last week when the neighbours were in darkness while we were a beacon in the complex. We have realised, however, that our current solar system is by far inadequate for daily living. We will have to upgrade it in time, but the cost of installing solar is not to be sneezed at.
We have run into our first biggish problem with our LSF house. The MgO boards have been sealed together with a substance similar in function to “poly filler”. We have, however, had continuous trouble with cracks developing at the junction of these boards. After endless sanding and repainting, we are now awaiting expert opinion on how to overcome this problem. I hope the gurus have an answer for us, otherwise maybe we can paint with that new “cracked-looking” technique!
Another addition this week was the installation of my husband’s custom-made braai. Goodness! It is huge! It has been installed into the patio, with an enormous chimney, and an even bigger rotisserie! There have been rumblings around the house of a lamb on the spit (yes, it is that big)!
Our snag list is slowly being worked away, and yesterday the guys started clearing out their tools, so I think the end is near. I am hoping to hang a few curtains soon, and start arranging my kitchen. What an adventure!
