Build it Green – Part 27

Written by admin

Wow! I can’t believe this is a room in my home. It looks stunning! Our formal lounge now boasts a bamboo floor and the most beautiful, draping curtains emerging from behind the dropped ceiling.  The room is almost complete! It only needs skirtings and the fireplace. And of course, furniture! (we’ll worry about that later). Marijke also had most of the blinds installed this week and they look lovely. They match the dark wood of the cupboards very nicely, and they fit snug into each window arch.

Unfortunately, most of the rooms in the house are sitting in a state of 90% completion. The kitchen needs countertops and doors, the bedrooms need skirtings and adjustment of cupboard doors. The bathrooms need a last few tiles, the study needs a final coat of paint in one corner.

On the outdoor side, I am very relieved to say that the dreadful concrete-sprayer machine has left the site to plague somebody else. It would appear that its only mortally wounded victim is a wild pear tree.  I am singing songs to the poor shrub and whispering affectionate words to the drooping leaves, but every day as its branches hang lower, I strengthen my resolve to never spray concrete anywhere again.

That said, the wall is also not yet finished; it still requires a bit of plastering. On the whole though, the finished boundary looks good, and the final product is indistinguishable from a brick and mortar wall.

By the end of last week, the entrance to the house was being levelled in preparation for the paving, and that in itself leant a different feel to the house. The grass hasn’t looked back, in fact we will probably have to mow it sometime this weekend.

I am really looking forward to getting rid of the enormous piles of boxes packed everywhere. My wish was partially satisfied when I emptied four boxes into the linen cupboard. I have oodles of space! The cupboard is a delight! It has two double doors with shallow shelves, and two dedicated downlights positioned to shine to the interior. My hubby has also done a bit of unpacking. He has moved his office onto the new premises, and now has a beautiful view from his upstairs window. Between the view, and the ongoing construction, I am not sure how he is managing to focus on his work.

Things are definitely progressing, except for one obvious omission: there is still no sign of our steel staircase. We wait in anticipation…
