Situated on an upmarket estate on the KwaZulu-Natal coastline, this home offers its residents the quality of life that comes with estate living as well as the uninterrupted and panoramic views of the Durban coastline and the majestic Indian Ocean.
The elegant Floridian design of the home was prescribed by the estate’s architectural guidelines. This look was created through the use of white walls that are contrasted by the rich textures of terracotta tiles that were installed on the roof, and the look was further enhanced by architectural elements including turrets and arches.
Completing the architectural style was the great attention to detail that was given to the finishes such as the window-sills and the mouldings. The owners were fortunate to find an ideal site on the estate, as they explain that “there are eight smaller complexes within the estate, but there are only nine individual sites, which have uninterrupted ocean views, great elevation, and large and leveled grounds – which is very scarce in Umhlanga. On this particularly site, you feel like you are on top of the world”.
The architecture of the home makes maximum use of the stunning views through the incorporation of large expanses of glass and windows – an excellent idea as this brings the outdoors indoors and gives the home a bright atmosphere. This has also resulted in light and airy interiors that are filled with an abundance of natural light.
With a love and appreciation for decor, the owners decided to decorate the interiors themselves as opposed to using a decorator.
By looking through many magazines they were able to get the inspiration that would turn their house into a home.
Inspiration for the interiors takes its cue from the exteriors. “For the interior spaces we tried to follow the Floridian style, which is very grand and also comfortable.” The owner explains that this type of theme also fits well with home entertaining. The interiors are luxurious and display the owners’ sense of style and taste in a wonderful manner.
Like the exteriors, attention to detail is clear and nothing has been left to chance. The curtains have been adorned with Swarovski crystals, and these are further enhanced by custom-made pelmets with trimmings. The spacious bedrooms were designed to induce restful sleep with beds that are adorned with exclusive free-hand outlined quilting with throw-overs. These were further accentuated by custom-made headboards that are manufactured from only high-quality materials.
Underfoot luxury was provided for with porcelain tiles that emulate natural stone. These add warmth and character to the spaces that they were installed in. A diverse collection of Persian rugs made from wool, silk and cotton reinforces the sophisticated appeal of the home.
The ground floor is open-plan in its design and with the entertainment area flowing onto the outdoors, this level provides the perfect space that can be used for entertaining or just taking in the beautiful views that envelope the home. “We built this house with retirement in mind, so we love the whole of the bottom floor as it is our entire living area, as well as the study, our bedroom and bathroom – the stairs are for the youngsters,” explains the owner. Adding to the residents’ lifestyle is the excellent security offered by the estate.
