Dining Room

It’s time to dine

Now that winter is setting in, there’s no better time to entertain at home. However, before inviting guests over, there are several factors to consider. Here are some important tips for preparing your home to host memorable gatherings.

What should home owners consider when purchasing cutlery and crockery?

“Consider how often and for which occasions you’ll be using the crockery. If you entertain often, you’ll want to ensure you have enough items for the number of guests you usually invite over. Dinnerware that works for everyday use and special occasions is a good investment, as you’ll get a lot of use out of it. Glazed items are important as they’re much more durable and stay new for longer. And of course, if you can clean it safely in the dishwasher, bonus points!

“Classic cutlery can last a lifetime if you care for it well and can become an heirloom to pass down to your children. Select items that fit your lifestyle and that are made from durable materials that will stand the test of time.” – Marisa Beyers, media manager at Babylonstoren

What does that ideal dining room consist of?

“The ideal dining room consists of furniture that meets the exact needs of its occupants. In most South African households, the dining table would be the centrepiece. It should give a striking visual impression yet be practical, e.g., with extensions built in to comfortably accommodate friends and family.

“Dining chairs must be comfortable and complement the dining table for a great impression even when no one is sitting at it. For practical reasons a sideboard or a cabinet to display or hide essentials for dinner and dinner parties is recommended.” – Kgomotso Letebele, design consultant at BoConcept

When it comes to dining room tables, what can we look forward to in terms of design, materials, functionality?

“Our newest look at BoConcept is inspired by natural materials and includes natural oak wood handcrafted into beautiful organic furniture pieces with the tabletop and chair seats appearing to balance delicately above their bases.

“All the newest dining table options like the Hauge come with extension segments cleverly integrated into the design to allow for conversion with no effort. The range of options continues to place the table at the centre of attention with a strong emphasis on look, composition, and functionality. Materials include natural wood, stone, ceramic, or lacquered surfaces.” – Kgomotso Letebele, design consultant at BoConcept

What should home owners consider when shopping for dining room tables and chairs?

Investing in a dining table and chairs is an important decision that requires careful consideration. Cheryl Du Preez, visual merchandising co-ordinator for Cielo, provides insights in three key factors to consider when choosing your perfect dining set:

1. Size – how many people do you want to seat?

Start thinking about how you’ll be using the table. For example, when you’re eating will there be only plates and cutlery, or will you have lots of serving dishes too? How many people do we want to seat and is there enough space between the legs to accommodate this? If you don’t have enough room for a large dining table, consider an extendable table.

2. Shape – let your room decide

Rectangular tables are ideal for busy dining areas and also great for bench seating which can be tucked under the table. They also offer lots of space because you can use all four sides. Round or oval tables work well to balance a square room and often allow more people to sit around them. Square tables are good for conversation since everyone faces each other.

3. Material – choose one that suits your lifestyle

If you have children, or a dinner table that multitasks as a desk, choose tables with beautiful yet durable materials. We like mixing a wood top with a metal base. Metal is versatile and generally more affordable than wood, stone or marble, and blends well with urban, modern or contemporary home design.
