8 exciting home décor trends to watch out for in 2023.

Curves

“Arches, round shapes and curved furniture have definitely made a comeback this year and will continue into 2023. I think we are going to see softer spaces, more circular rugs, oblong mirrors, mushroom lighting, curved kitchen islands, curved sofas and more. For a while furniture has been designed with straight lines and hard angles, however there has recently been a shift towards more organic and sculptural designs. Curves add an element of softness and sophistication to a space.” – Loredana Morton, interior designer and owner of Loredana Morton Interiors

Black is back

“Dramatic interiors, richly layered with dark hues. Things like black wallpaper, dark furniture, brass accessories, sculptures and black kitchens will be more popular. Combining dark and moody elements with lots of natural light will be the key to creating sophisticated spaces that don’t feel too dark or dingy.” – Loredana Morton, interior designer and owner of Loredana Morton Interiors

Japandi

“The Japandi trend can be described as a style that combines the modern flair of Scandi design with the timeless elegance of Japanese design. The combination of the two styles generate minimalism with a trace of simplicity. The organic use of nature such as wood, stone, linen, ceramics and leather are key elements in Japandi design as it stimulates a link between wellness and tranquillity. Neutral tones are another approach to creating Japandi inspired spaces. Apply warmer tones such as taupe, ivory, dusty grey and beige to your scatter cushions, rugs, throws, accessories, materials and paint selection for a more neutral layered space.” – Leanne Van Niekerk, interior designer and owner of LVN Interiors

Luxe design

“The luxe design trend can be defined as sophistication and glamour. Fluidity in design, custom pieces and ambient lighting are one of a few approaches to establishing luxe design style. Luxe-inspired spaces can be created by curating custom furniture pieces with quality selected materials and finishes to generate a luxurious and timeless feel. Elevate your home further with the combination of warm metals such as brass and gold with ambient lighting to set the tone of opulence.” – Leanne Van Niekerk, interior designer and owner of LVN Interiors

Contrasts

“We are starting to become bold in playing with highly contrasting textures. These can be finishes such as concrete ceilings or walls paired with highly polished cupboards or mirrored elements. It could be the use of natural woods paired with plush velvet cushions or even velvet curtains to add drama. It’s the risk of pairing these opposite textured finishes that will be successful in home décor for 2023.” – Kirsty Langley, director at Design Hatch

Organised spaces

“Organisation has always been important in home décor, but now more than ever it has become fun and trendy. From pantry styling to bedroom cupboard organisation, there are no limits to the way you can organise each and every space in the home. We love to include drawer organisers in the bedroom cupboards even for things like watches and ties for men.” – Kirsty Langley, director at Design Hatch

Sustainability

“Sustainable materials like bamboo or reclaimed wood are now common in furniture design, together with a move to manufacture soft furnishings in recycled, environmentally friendly materials such as wool, linen and hemp.” – Karin Cawthorne, owner of KARE Johannesburg

Monochrome magic

“Mostly known as a black and white combination, monochrome also translates as ‘one colour’; playing with colour combinations to include different tones, textures and materials that complement your colour of choice.” – Karin Cawthorne, owner of KARE Johannesburg
