Juanita Clark of Extreme Wall Designs Inc. explains: “Wall coverings have seen a revival and made a massive comeback into the decor and design arena. However, things have evolved since the 1960s, and the quality and images are very different. As much as there is still a space for art deco, most of the wall coverings we produce are modern and classic and will last an extended time.”
The green movement has had a significant influence on the latest trends in the industry. This is seen in patterns designed to bring the outdoors indoors with floral, leaves, bamboo, pebbles, forest and beach patterns. Other materials also include natural woven grasses, for example.
Anne Roselt, colour manager at Plascon, goes on to add: “Greens, blues and earthy browns are popular, especially on feature walls. My personal favourite is painting a feature wall with some design, be it florals, leaves or tree stems – it’s much easier to do than you think and much less messy than wallpaper. Metallics are also popular and Plascon Pearl, Gold or Silver paint used as a design accent on a feature wall will really give it some life.”
Juanita goes on to explain: “Typical wallpaper designs are no longer just stripe or pattern, but high resolution images are used to create a specific theme, genre or atmosphere. Rooms are designed around the wall, and not the other way around. They become the focal point, and can easily be changed – and an entire room is transformed.”
