Located in a prime suburb in Johannesburg, this awe-inspiring home comprises a variety of elements that make it the perfect residence. Primarily, the owners wanted to create a home that looked like it had been in its location for years – one that fitted in with the surrounding environment.
Owing to the challenges that came with creating a home on a site that was long and narrow, the design made provisions for the home to be laid out on the stand to maximise the north aspect for virtually every room in the home. This not only ensured a unique structure but since all of the internal doors are glass panelled, each room is bathed in natural light, with the exception of the bathrooms.
Another trademark element of the area that can be seen in the design of the home is the corrugated cromadek roof which, according to the owner, was a feature that was always going to be a part of the design.
With the use of natural stone cladding, clapper boards, the corrugated roof and natural materials throughout, this spacious and beautiful home epitomises the true nature of upmarket South African architecture and design.
The calming aesthetics of the exteriors lend themselves to the treatment of the interior as well. With the help of an esteemed interior design company, the home reflects spaces that have a Japanese feel with Scandinavian influences, and like the exterior, the interior spaces also emit a tranquil ambience.
A subdued colour palette which features hues including creams and browns forms the ideal foundation on which the home’s interior design is based.
Complementary materials and soft furnishing give the home an appeal that is classic and will remain attractive for years to come. Through the strategic placement of furniture, each room has enough space to make mobility a breeze.
“We love all the rooms in this home as each has its own unique attributes,” remarks the owner. If he had to pick his favourite room, however, the owner suggests it would have to be the guest bedroom. “It has a coolness about it, especially in summer, and it also has its own private courtyard and outside shower,” he concludes.
