A Johannesburg-based interior design studio, Oksijen works across residential, commercial and hospitality projects in South Africa and throughout Africa.
What do you love about your profession?
I love that I can make things and that I can make a difference in people’s lives through how they live in a space.
How do you celebrate other women in the home industry?
I send the work. When a maker, a supplier or a designer does something good, I tell people, I refer them, I put them in front of clients. Celebration in this industry is practical. A paying job, not a compliment.
Who or what has been your inspiration throughout your life?
So many people at different stages of my life. There was always that one person who was there to inspire and propel me forward. From my high school drama teacher, my daughter Michaela, to my life partner, Moses.
What is your life affirmation that you live by daily?
The words often attributed to Martin Luther always inspire me: “Even if I knew the world was going to end tomorrow, I would still plant an apple tree today.”
What is the one book that you recommend every woman needs to read?
Women Who Run With the Wolves by Clarissa Pinkola Estés, and Nancy Friday’s My Mother/My Self.
What’s the one thing that makes you get out of bed in the morning?
My life! How exciting is it to be alive in the world, to get up every day and run and create and make things better?
A woman to me is … anything she wants to be!
