How do I clean my mobile phone?

Written by Tiana Cline

From mini USB vacuum cleaners to Logitech’s washable keyboard, how we keep our technology clean is slowly evolving. And it’s a good thing – according to microbiologists, the more you touch something, the more bacteria you’ll transfer onto that surface… so just stop and think how many times a day you check your phone.

What’s more, studies have shown that E. coli, MRSA, Streptococcus and many other bacterial species live on mobile phones, which, according to research, have 10 times more germs per square metre than a public toilet seat and 15 times more than a toilet seat handle.

But before you run to the kitchen and whip out an all-purpose household cleaner to wipe down your phone, tablet or laptop, there are a few ground rules. First, stay away from anything that contains acetone or alcohol, as it can remove your screen’s protective coating. Rather, opt for a soft, microfibre (and always lint-free) cloth and get dusting. You could also use a clean cotton square.

Always avoid abrasive cloths, towels and paper towels, because they could potentially damage or scratch your phone. Cotton buds, especially the pointed, child-friendly ones, work well for tighter surfaces and ports.

If you have sticky finger marks or crumbs (moms, we’re talking to you), you should turn off your phone or tablet and wipe everything down with a slightly damp cloth. Also, don’t spray a surface directly, as you could end up with water damage.

If it isn’t coming clean, it might be worth investing in computer-specific products, such as Hama’s Foam Screen Cleaner (R59, incredible.co.za) or Durable’s Smart Tab Clean Wipes, which come in a pack of 10 (R70, takealot.com). Fellowes is also a good brand to look out for, as they make a variety of useful tech-cleaning products. Alternatively, you can mix white vinegar and distilled water to create your own cleaning solution.
