Terrific trends

We asked four interior decorators which décor items are currently on their must-have list.

Studio 19

What is one décor item every stylish person should have in their home?

Farzeen Dockrat, owner, So Ya Designs: A standout light, a piece that not only serves its purpose, but also creates a focal point in the home.

Debbie Votin, partner, Studio 19: Original art. Even if you purchase only one piece every two years, it is an incredible investment.

Hayley Turner, partner & co-founder, Bone Studio: An original antique piece of furniture (preferably a family heirloom).

Farai Chinya, assistant to Donald Nxumalo, DNX Interior Design: I would say the one thing every stylish person should have in their house is a reed diffuser! Many people overlook this handy accessory, which comes in a range of beautiful containers and decadent fragrances. Not only do they look beautiful, they also keep your spaces smelling great.

Your favourite décor trend that is making a comeback?

Dockrat: The classic colours of the ’70s, accentuated with textured wallpapers, bold design and modern concepts, create an eclectic and sometimes eccentric look.

Votin: The ’70s. I love all those delicious wools and fabrics, and quirky shapes like the polar bear sofa. Everyone wants in on this trend.

Turner: Earthenware pottery, in all shapes, colours and sizes – and the bigger the better. We use Nave Ceramics for a lot of our styling.

Chinya: I have always enjoyed the traditional nuances found in different design styles, but my favourite at present is the British Houndstooth pattern.
