Hotel Hotel

Written by Jess Binns

I don’t claim to know much about the city of Canberra in Australia. It was never a place I visited whilst spending time down under. And I always had the feeling that this capital city got left behind Sydney and Melbourne, never quite comparing to the dominant and trend-setting pair. However, times appear to be changing with the introduction of Hotel Hotel within the New Action precinct in the heart of the city.

Hotel Hotel is a vast 68-room boutique hotel which has pulled out all the stops design wise to achieve a masterpiece of Australian talent. The hotel, a concertinaed-looking structure with strong concrete facets and contrasting light timber cladding, is located within the Nishi building.

It shares it’s home with a cinema, shops and restaurants, as well as offices and apartments nestled above. The entrance was created by one of the many creative companies involved in the development of the project. Designers March Studio used thousands of reclaimed timber strips to create a tunnel-like approach as you enter. The use of differing materials is as vast as the amount of different designers involved on this project! Many up and coming Australian creative’s were bought in to add their stamp.

The hotel settles well into this diverse part of the city adding a bit of edge that it lacked before. I strongly suggest a visit to their website to check out the interior spaces; each and every one is as rich and textured as the next.
