How to design a display for your wine collection

Designing a cellar or display for your wine collection can be daunting, as there are so many display options, styles and products available on the market. The Wine Room brings you a step-by-step guide on how to start, and the critical aspects to consider.

How many bottles of wine do you want to display?

This is always a good question to consider when designing a wine display in your home.

If you have a small collection of wine (under 200 bottles), then you might be able to house this in sleek wall displays in your kitchen or living areas. The Rare Cork wall-mounted peg columns provide easy-to-install and versatile display options in timber, resin-stone and steel finishes. Each product is supplied with install guides and fixings, with The Wine Room’s support team on hand to guide you through the install as needed.

If you have a larger collection of wine (above 200 bottles), then you’ll need to look at a dedicated space in your home, such as under your stairs, a converted storeroom, an underground space, or a large glazed wall cabinet in your living areas. For these spaces, The Wine Room can design and install a fully custom wine cellar, including oak or steel displays, integrated LEDs, climate control and cellar-graded glazing.

Do you want to preserve your wine or is it for everyday drinking?

For everyday drinking, you do not need to cool your wine, especially if you’re planning on consuming your bottle within a year of purchase. In this instance, simple wall displays will suffice.

If you are a more serious wine collector, then preserving your wines at the correct temperature of 13-17°C, with humidity between 55-75% RH, is critical. The Wine Room offers specialist climate control units suited to both walk-in cellars and smaller glazed cabinets, both ducted and visible.

You may also opt for a discreet wine fridge, which can keep your collection not only at cellaring temperature, but also at your preferred serving temperatures (approx. 5-8°C for white wines and champagnes and 15-18°C for reds). The Wine Room retails a wide range of wine and beverage coolers, as well as humidors, wine preservers, wine dispensers and ice machines.

What materials and design style do you want to achieve in your display?

Last but certainly not the least important is deciding on the aesthetics of your wine display or cellar. Your style might be traditional and classic, using stained oak cabinets with discreet lighting; or it may be bold and modern, using stone finishes, metals and glass.

The designs really are endless when designing your wine space in your home, with options to suit all styles, budgets and sizes.

The Wine Room offers a full turnkey service, from design consultation through to manufacturing, installation and stocking. The Wine Room’s teams are available in Cape Town and Johannesburg for in-person consultations, with solid experience across South Africa.
