How To Trends

Playful patterns

Written by Shereen Lurie

One of the most exciting ways to add visual impact to your interior spaces is by incorporating patterns. By skillfully blending bold and unconventional patterns, you can create unique spaces that make a playful statement and warmly welcome you inside.

Why is it important to include patterns in the interior design of the home?

“Pattern allows you to create a unique signature look in your home as opposed to a home that looks like the ‘one next door’. It’s a wonderful way to inject your own style and personality into a space and it doesn’t have to be big and bold. Wallpaper is an easy way to make a change to your home and it only takes an afternoon to install.” – Haidee Kramer, owner of Dreamweaver Studios

What are some easy ways to do this?

“There are numerous ways to incorporate patterns into your interior design. One option is to use patterned textiles, such as scatter pillows, area rugs, curtains, or throws and blankets, to add both interest and texture to a room. Another possibility is to consider adding a patterned wallpaper to an accent wall or a smaller space like a bathroom or laundry room.

“Hanging artwork with a patterned background or bold graphic design can also contribute to visual interest. Additionally, incorporating patterned accessories like lampshades, vases, or picture frames into your décor can make a difference.

“Don’t be afraid to mix and match patterns; a useful guideline is to combine one large-scale pattern, one medium-scale pattern, and one small-scale or micro pattern. Furthermore, pairing patterns with contrasting solid colours or neutral tones creates balance and prevents overwhelming the space.

“Finally, playing with textures, such as a patterned shag rug or a quilted throw, adds depth and further enhances visual appeal.” – Lorna Bailey, owner and founder, and Nina Kruger, marketing and design, from The Mill Fabrics

What is a versatile pattern to incorporate into your interiors?

“Herringbone is a popular textile pattern in interior design due to its classic and timeless look. It is a versatile pattern that can add texture and visual interest to any space, and it pairs well with a variety of design styles. Herringbone fabrics can be used in a wide range of home décor applications, from upholstery to throw pillows and curtains.

“One of the benefits of using herringbone as a textile pattern is its ability to blend in with other patterns and colours. Herringbone’s subtle zigzag pattern is micro enough to act as a neutral, yet it also adds a touch of visual interest to the space. This versatility allows it to be paired with a wide range of other patterns and textures without feeling too overwhelming.

“In terms of how to incorporate herringbone into your interiors using textiles, there are many options available. Herringbone fabrics can be used to upholster chairs and sofas, adding a classic and sophisticated touch to the piece. Alternatively, herringbone scatter pillows or throw blankets can be used to add texture to a space.” – Lorna Bailey, owner and founder, and Nina Kruger, marketing and design, from The Mill Fabrics

What can we expect in terms of the trends for patterns in the coming year?

“Florals will continue to be strong, as well as botanical prints on larger scale, but what is coming through strong is black and white (yes also a colour) prints covering a wide spectrum of design. Sometimes all that is needed to make an interior sing is simple black and white.” – Stephen Black, managing director of Stuart Graham Fabrics
