Practical and comfortable go hand in hand with this homely and unpretentious residence in a pristine area in KwaZula-Natal. Brilliant views of a golf course and the ocean make this land an amazing location – but the house itself is a Colonial-meets-Moroccan treat.

The upmarket estate that the home is located in is renowned for its lush and unspoiled beauty. Due to the fact that it has strict architectural guidelines to adhere to, quality is ensured throughout the private estate.

In this way, the home could be practical as well as comfortable, and is therefore well suited for a perfect family home.

This “home with a heart”, as the lady of the house describes it, is decorated with pictures of her family, memorabilia and mementos. “We have so many good times with our family and friends on the patio, in the kitchen or sitting at the dining room table, sharing meals and a bottle of wine. We swim in the pool, play board games and watch movies, and I feel our home really blends in with and complements our lifestyle.”

Enhancing the homely appeal, the smell of vanilla gently seeps through the house the moment you enter. You’re comfortable before you even sit down. In terms of the theme of the home, there’s a hint of Colonial taste that is met with a touch of island-style, and Moroccan elements can be seen here and there to spice up the home while adding a remarkable sense of interest.

Fine detail sprinkled liberally throughout emphasises the way in which the home has been decorated. Take for instance the kitchen, which according to the owners is the heart of this home. “It turned out even better than I could have hoped for. I worked tirelessly with the kitchen designer to make sure that every detail fitted into my overall vision, which was to make it warm for family and friends to enjoy, while still being stylish, timeless and full of character. My ovens are my favourite; they are amazing.”

Wood is extremely prevalent in this home, adding warmth and comfort to any room you step into. In keeping with the Colonial old-fashioned theme, the home owners’ passion for bringing old and new together creatively is evident throughout.

Copper taps, old clocks, brilliantly Colonial light fittings and hangings, and even the mirrors around the home enhance this theme.

Since the family enjoys the outdoors so much, they also wanted to make sure the patio accented the Moroccan theme. Broken mirror mosaics on the wall were also used here.

From the cladding on the pillars, to the sapphire blue swimming pool, every single detail works and augments the next – adding to a beautiful overall picture. In this pristine abode, the whole really is the sum of its parts.

As advice for future home owners, the residents of this beautiful estate home have the following words of wisdom: “Work with your dream. See it in your head and start planning for it now. It’s never too early to start a ‘home file’ filled with pictures that inspire you. When you see something you love, buy it. That way you won’t have to build your house and then be under pressure to furnish it – you will already have many of the elements that you loved when you weren’t under pressure.
