Hallways aren’t just paths that lead you from room to room; they are also spaces where you can express your style and interests, and display collections. Here are a few tips and ideas on how to successfully decorate your hallway.

Paint the hall

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: painting is the cheapest way to update a space. Paint your hallway walls in a light colour to create a light and airy feel, or paint one wall in a bright or dramatic shade to create an accent wall. If you want to try something a bit different, you could paint the hallway doors instead. This can help emphasise the doorway’s architectural elements.

Add architectural features

If you want to add a bit of interest and texture to your hallway, you should consider installing wainscoting. It’s a kind of wood paneling that lines the walls of the room to add decorative accents, improve insulation or cover damage on walls. There are many different treatments, ranging from full panelled walls to picture framing wainscoting. Regardless of your style preferences and space requirements, installing wainscoting can transform your hallway wall into an architectural feature.

Make it functional

If your hallway is close to the entryway, make it your designated space for storing essentials (like keys, bags and other small items that could get lost, especially when running late). Depending on the size of your space, try mounting some hooks to hang coats in the hallway, or get a table, baskets and bowls to store pick-up-and-go items.

Create a gallery wall

A passage can be a great place for displaying art, pictures and your interests. Consider creating a photo wall collage full of your favourite family photos, snaps from your travels, or art you have made or collected. It will make walking down the hallway like walking down memory lane.

Assess and accessorise

Look at your hallway and decide what needs to be hidden, highlighted or updated. For instance, if you have a long passage a hall runner can emphasise this length and draw attention to your floor. And, if you have a great ceiling or dimly lit passage, consider getting beautiful light fixtures to illuminate the space or direct the attention upwards. Also consider adding personal touches like a an end table to display one of your beloved collections, books or interesting knickknacks you’ve gathered throughout the years and on your travels.
