How To Living Spaces

Five things to consider when buying art for your home

By Sungula Nkabinde

Choosing a piece of art that reflects your personality, interests, tastes and getting it to fit in with the overall theme of your home can be a daunting task. There are so many forms of art and the most successful home is one of perfect balance. Sculptures and paintings of similar styles can complement each other very well in an area.

Here are five things consider when choosing art for your home:

1. Know that there is no such thing as bad art. If you love it, then you should have it.  The most important thing when buying art is to buy what you like and what makes you happy when you look at it. You are going to live with it for a long time and it needs to fit with your personality

2. Do not overdo a particular art form in one environment. Too many paintings, for example, in one area can take away from the allure of having maybe one painting in that particular space.

3. Once you have found an art piece that interests you, first try viewing it in your home before buying it. It is better to see the art, as it will be in your home because how you saw it in your mind might not be how it actually will look when it is placed in its respective spot.

4. It is generally distasteful to buy art that has really been copied from well-known artists– this can only show a lack of depth and individuality of the artist and comes across as a cheap knockoff.

5. When buying expensive art for investment purposes, make sure that you have it insured to cover theft or any kind of damage
