The estate falls on the iconic and fully functional Irene dairy farm, which embodies true holistic living.

Due to the encroaching urbanisation of the area, and to ensure the survival of the farm, the family chose to move with the times and set in motion the development of the Southdowns Residential Estate.

Forming an enclosed community, the estate has freehold and sectional title options available and offers all the modern day amenities required to make daily living a breeze. Residents have access to Southdowns Shopping Centre which holds a comprehensive medical centre, chic boutiques and gourmet restaurants as well as outdoor amenities which include 13km of walking, hiking and cycling trails. With direct access to the dairy farm one can safely walk to fetch a bottle of milk straight from the Irene Dairy Farm Store.

The first of its kind, the estate is also proud to place a strong emphasis on using alternative energy. Each house is provided with natural gas, reducing the strain on our national electricity grid. Residents are also encouraged to use solar energy and to recycle water thus making the community as energy efficient as possible.

“Wildlife is also protected in Southdowns, with a special flight path for the threatened Geffroy’s Horseshoe Bat,” explains Jack Prentice, director of the project. Still exuding an old-world charm encompassed by modern day essentials, Southdowns truly is a little piece of heaven and truly offers “a life less hurried”.
