Space savers in the kitchen

Written by Janine Jorgensen

When space isn’t an option, but neither is a compromise on function and design, these helpful tips – from our go-to panel of kitchen experts – will help you make the most of your compact kitchen.

“Functionality is a must in kitchen design, as this space is purposed for use; but at the same time, it needs to offer an element of show,” says Philip Richards of blu_line. And this show can be in the form of materials. “In order to ensure the space has character and interest, consider combining various textures, such as raised-cut veneer, stone, glass with a high gloss or matt finish,” adds Philip.

Sleek and handle-free cabinetry creates a streamlined environment in the kitchen, with pull-out drawers and integrated appliances being  practical solutions for removing clutter in a small area. Good organisation is essential for keeping the space clean and stress-free.

“If kitchens are part of an open-plan design, ensure that the lighting in the kitchen enhances the surrounding areas. Current trends include pendants, as they are versatile, downlighters within cabinetry, and chandeliers for their excellent light distribution,” says Jakes Bouwer of The Lighting Warehouse.

“The greatest asset for any compact kitchen is ergonomics. You need to design a kitchen according to your needs,” comments Sergio Polita of Snaidero Cusine.

When it comes to choosing suitable appliances, Derk van der Veen of Euro Appliances has this advice: “Think about where the appliances are going to be kept. If they will be visible, make sure they form part of the design. Don’t be afraid to let them make a statement.” “As the kitchen in a small space is often used as an entertaining area too, consider investing in a coffee machine and a wine cooler,” he adds.

In order to really optimise cabinet storage and gain more internal space, Elwyn Sykes, National Sales Manager of Blum, recommends using deeper, full extension drawer systems. “By using full extension 550mm deep drawers, instead of the standard 500mm length drawers, you gain an additional 30% more drawer space. Higher drawers can add up to 55% more storage space and wider drawers a further 15%“. Turn a tall cabinet with cavernous dark depths into a practical storage solution with Blum’s SPACE TOWER. The inner pull-outs can be opened individually and are accessible from the front and sides. This can be retrofitted to any cupboard. Pull-outs come in various heights, widths and depths to suit personal requirements. The pull-outs close silently and effortlessly with Blum’s unique dampening, BLUMOTION which is integrated into the runners.
