How To Living Spaces

Mix and match

By Refiloe Serai-Mzolo

A great trend for home decor is mixing and matching various prints and patterns. Although it can be intimidating to combine various patterns, if done in the correct manner, it will bring character to your home, while also highlighting certain spaces.

Start small

If mixing prints and patterns scares you, start off small. For example, incorporate the prints through the use of differently patterned cushions on a solid-coloured couch.

Neutral palettes

If you are going to have contrasting wallpaper and rugs with bold prints in the same room, keep everything else in the room neutral. That way you won’t overwhelm the room with a variety of prints, while creating interesting focal points within the space.

Complementary colours

A great way to mix and match prints and patterns is by staying in the same colour family. If your duvet has yellow flowers, add a throw with yellow chevron strips and a Persian rug with yellow detailing to make your bedroom the only place to be in your home.

Go bold or go home

Once you have the courage to go all out with prints and patterns, you will be surprised by how far you can push the clashing trend. Mix a striped couch with flowered cushions or an Aztec-print wallpaper with geometric print carpet in the dining room.
