Lighting in the kitchen

Written by Shereen Lurie

Consider the following when illuminating your kitchen…

1. Allow for multiple independently switched circuits.

This allows you to select just one or varying combinations depending on the task or mood.

2. Choose different lighting for different tasks. Lighting options include:

General lights – fluorescent, pendant or downlights will illuminate the whole room. Angled downlights can be good for highlighting certain features of the kitchen. Fluorescent lights can be better suited for a scullery as the light can be quite harsh.

Under-counter lights – soft under counter lights will illuminate the area between your cupboards and counter-top, highlighting your splashback detail and appliances. Make sure you allow for a power-point inside the cupboard to avoid unsightly exposed cables running down to the closest socket.

3. Select the colour temperature of the bulbs.

Lighting temperatures range from cool to warm in varying increments. Consider LED downlights for energy efficiency as well as to keep the ambient temperature level down.

4. Add character to your kitchen.

A central island unit can benefit from its own downlight circuit or even a decorative pendant. This will transform your kitchen from a utilitarian space into a warm, family-centric area. Visit a lighting showroom to get an idea of the many options available to you.
